Once upon a time...

Once upon a time there was a woman named Castle, who dreamed of transforming the mundane, everyday world by sharing her vision of romance and beauty with one and all.  One day, her childhood dolls murmured a message in her ear: the way to live a life full of adventure and amazement is to have a playful and fanciful mind.  Inspired by their wise words, Castle decided to make her dream come true.

Her journey began in Montréal, studying Fashion and creating a clothes line all her own.  Time passed; a few years went by.  She worked hard - like Cinderella on her gown for the ball, immersed in creation. Until, suddenly, the winds of change blew into her life; at first a gentle breeze, then a torrential whirlwind, it moved her in a new direction.  She had found a way to unite her passion for fashion with her love for people by entering the world of retail.

In 2008, she created her first boutique, Razberry, committing to the mission of dressing young poetic women, nostalgic at heart.  Two years later, at 1861 Saint Catherine Street West, a second boutique opened its doors not two steps away from the first, which then gently stole the limelight!  Thus was 1861 born, coming to offer a bright and welcoming landmark for all vintage, fashion, and fantasy lovers in the heart of Montréal.

The idea behind Boutique 1861 was to encourage and enable women to indulge in the pleasure of dressing up from head to toe, or rather from tiara to glass slipper.  In order to revive the elegance of the Victorian Era, 1861 offers a complete and varied range of clothing and accessories that are wonderfully feminine alternatives to the classic - and sometimes tiresome - jeans and t-shirt combination.  Just one visit in-store will convince the most sober-minded that you don’t need the excuse of a special occasion to wear tulle, sequins, and frills; every day can be a celebration!

So popular was it that Boutique 1861 was compelled to open a second location on St Lawrence Boulevard in the summer of 2012.  And even with the two boutiques the ever-growing demand for the beautiful dresses they offered could not be met!
That’s when Castle turned to her lifelong partner and accomplice, her knight in shining armour, Simon Touzin, to create an online store whose architecture rivalled that of a Rococo palace, from which fashionistas from around the globe could receive small beribboned and perfumed treasures at their doorstep.

In November 2013, 1861 grew even bigger with the opening of its sister boutique, La Petite Garçonne, just down the boulevard, which added a touch of elegance to the dark winter months.  The personality of this most recent member of the 1861 family is a little different.  While it generates the same love of originality and beautiful things, it presents a more refined, modern, and sophisticated version of its sisters.  Its elegance is interpreted in the French style with a nod to Coco Chanel, the quintessential tomboy.  Straight cuts and androgynous allure are honoured here, representing a more minimalist facet of feminine refinement.

The tale of 1861 was already grandiose, but Castle wasn’t finished yet.  As this epic journey of sharing and fun enfolded, an idea began to bud in the heart of this grand romantic, an idea that grew and bloomed in the most beautiful way.  Boudoir 1861 was born shortly before the Saint Valentine’s Day celebrations in 2016 to facilitate brides and their entourage in a bright and beautiful haven where they can have a fitting experience worthy of a fairy tale.  Velvet drapes, crystal chandeliers, and bouquets of flowers decorate this temple of femininity, while personalized service is guaranteed by a team of dedicated stylists, like fairy godmothers, devoted to the art of dressing you up with taste and a touch of magic!
